My mother didn’t look so good at breakfast. I started to say something to her in front of Frank and my father, but she read my mind and began talking before I had a chance. “I think I love this kitchen more than any place on earth.”

“She said the same thing about the Eaton Centre,” Frank said, trying to make a joke. My father mustered a polite smile, and Frank added, “I think she was only joking then. It was Christmas and all, you know.”

Frank appeared much more comfortable this morning. My father seemed slightly baffled but not unhappy. My mother had put on too much makeup and was working hard at trying to pretend she felt okay, but I could tell she wasn’t feeling well.

Frank told a story about a woman in Scarborough who had come into his store and bought a new pair of shoes, the exact size, exact style, exact everything, every single month. “The only thing that ever changed was the price, but she never complained and I never asked her why.”

“She probably just liked the attention,” my mother said. “Frank was a very sensitive salesperson.”

“Salesman, please.”

“Okay, salesman,” my mother conceded. “Anyway, people do funny things and you never know exactly why.”
